Cork is a resilient and nearly impermeable organic material that is harvested from the Cork Oak Tree. Cork is the bark of the tree and it is harvested for the first time when the tree is about 25 years old. The tree is never cut down and since the cork will grow back it is considered a renewable resource. Cork trees live to be about 200 years old.
Because of its durability and natural ability to restore its shape, Cork has seen widespread popularity and use in a variety of items such as bottle stoppers, bulletin boards and flooring. Much of cork’s rising appeal is due to homeowners trying to make decisions that benefit the environment.
Maintaining a cork floor is relatively easy and all that is required is ocasionally sweeping and damp mopping. Cork is a relatively inexpensive flooring choice with many advantages.
